The California Climate Action Registry (the Registry) was established by California statute as a non-profit voluntary registry for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The purpose of the Registry is to help companies and organizations with operations in the state to establish GHG emissions baselines against which any future GHG emission reduction requirements may be applied.
In 2004, MJB&A facilitated a multi-stakeholder workgroup process for the developed of the Power/Utility Protocol for the California Climate Action Registry. This first of its kind electric industry specific GHG emission inventory reporting protocol supplements the Registry's General Reporting Protocol, which utilized the WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol as its foundation. The Protocol provides guidance for entities on how to inventory their GHG emissions for participation in the Registry: what to measure, how to measure, the back-up data required, and certification requirements. MJB&A both facilitated the workgroup process and contributed to the writing of the protocol itself.
Participants in the California Registry agree to register their GHG emissions for all operations in California, and are encouraged to report nationwide. The Registry requires the inclusion of all direct GHG emissions, along with indirect GHG emissions from electricity use.
The Power/Utility Protocols are available from the California Climate Action Registry website.
