NYC Transit Bus Fleet Emissions Dramatically Reduced According to New Study

According a report authored by M. J. Bradley & Associates (MJB&A) and published by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), New York City Transit has reduced its emissions of particulate matter (PM) by 97 percent and nitrous oxides (NOx) by 58 percent from 1995 levels.  The reductions were the result of the Clean Fuel Bus Program, which was initiated in 1995 in response to the Natural Resources Defense Council's "Dump Dirty Diesels" Campaign.

NRDC contracted MJB&A to analyze the fleet emissions reductions achieved by the program from 1995 to 2006.  The program included aggressive replacement and/or repowering of older buses, the purchase and deployment of natural gas and hybrid-diesel electric buses, and retrofit of virtually the entire diesel fleet with diesel particulate filters.  For the analysis, MJB&A modeled the annual bus fleet emissions of NOx and PM over a ten year period based on changing bus assignments, annual mileage, and emissions factors (g/mi) by technology.

The success of the program has inspired other bus fleet operators in the US and around the world to make similar changes to reduce emissions.
